Special Hazards
Press Fires
Board press fires are a significant hazard associated with normal
production
processes for MDF, particleboard and OSB. Here are some
of the
manufacturing conditions that contribute to the
occurrence of board press fires:
 |
- Each press operates with up to 120,000 lbs. of thermal
heat transfer oil above flashpoint, in addition to a large
volume of hydraulic oils.
- Lubrication grease cover frames and surfaces
that can contribute to board press fires.
- Combustibles such as
dust, fiber, glue and release agent
make-up the mat for the board press fires.
- These same combustibles
move forward under high pressure and temperatures well
in excess of 300°F.
- Board press fires may get their
ignition source from the friction of moving parts.
- Flexible
high and low pressure hoses for hydraulic and hot thermal
oils.
- Return belts build-up fiber, oil, grease and fumes
as they travel through upper and lower tunnels.
- When exiting
the press, the board can ignite upon exposure to oxygen
creating a bad board press fire.
