Special Hazards
Dust Explosions
Dust explosions and fires can result in facilities
where pneumatic
conveying and air filtration systems are combined
with normal
manufacturing processes. The industries at the highest risk of
dust explosions
and fires employ drying, cutting, grinding and
other
abrasive processes where sparks and even fires are generated.

How a Dust Explosion Happens
A dust explosion or fire results when these normal manufacturing processes produce
a spark which is then picked up by the pneumatic system and transported along
with highly combustible wood chips, dust or other finely divided particles.
When that spark reaches the collector or storage bin, a dust explosion or
fire is very possible.
The Consequences of a Dust Explosion
Even one such dust explosion or fire can result in damages ranging from costly
repairs and down time to loss of plant facilities or even worse… an
expensive price to pay for a dust fire or explosion which could have been
avoided.
